Frequently Asked Questions
All Primo lanterns come standard as a wall mount. Additional mount configurations for the Jackson — Wall Mount, Post Mount, Ceiling Mount — can be selected during configuration, and custom brackets are available on a quote basis.
Gas versions of the Jackson come with a natural gas valve that burns approximately 1,600 BTU. Supply gas pressure to the lantern should be between 5 and 10 inches of water column (WC). Have all gas work performed by a licensed gas professional.
Yes. Primo gas lanterns use the same valve for both fuels — converting to propane (LP) is just a different stem fitted on top of the same valve, burning approximately 1,200 BTU (versus about 1,600 BTU on natural gas). Supply pressure should stay between 5 and 10 inches of water column (WC). Always have fuel conversions done by a licensed gas professional.
Electric versions of the Jackson come with candelabra-based sockets rated for a 60-watt maximum bulb. Use a bulb rated at or below 60 W.
Every Jackson comes standard in an Aged Copper finish sealed with a clearcoat. Uncoated natural copper will patina over time to a darker finish; the clearcoat helps preserve the aged-copper look.
Custom powder-coated finishes are available for an upcharge, and the powder coat seals the copper so it holds that finish for years: Oil Rubbed Bronze (ORB), a dark bronze with the brass hinges and latches left as-is; Graphite (GRA), a dark grey slate color with brass hinges and latches left as-is; Midnight Black (MB), a textured black finish where the complete lantern is black; and Bengal Silver (SIL), a brushed-nickel look where the complete lantern is silver.
Yes. Primo can produce custom lantern sizes and designs, as well as custom mounting brackets, on a quote basis. Contact us to discuss your project requirements.
Primo lanterns are manufactured in China and imported directly by French Market Lanterns.
Yes. All Primo accessories are made of aluminum and powder-coated black, so there is nothing to rust in the field — even in salt-water and coastal environments.
Yes. Every Primo lantern is ETL- or UL-certified and carries a certification sticker on the bottom of each fixture.
Yes. We strongly recommend installation by a licensed electrician (for electric lanterns) or a licensed plumber/gas fitter (for gas lanterns). Download the installation guide for your specific mount type from the Technical Documents section below.
Buying a Primo copper lantern is a lifetime purchase — cared for properly, it will last forever. Before cleaning, turn off your gas or electric lantern and let it cool for 15 minutes. Do not use cleaning products on the copper, as they can affect the patina process. Clean the surface with a damp cloth or, at most, soapy water, then rinse with clean water when finished. Lanterns under a covered roof should be cleaned more often, since they don't receive natural rainwater to rinse them.
In coastal environments, lanterns should be rinsed or cleaned on a regular basis, as salt deposits will build up on them. Copper oxidizes rapidly in a high-salt environment and can change color many times in response to atmospheric conditions — it may even take on a reddish tint and/or flake for a time before achieving its full patina. This is normal, and it is a natural protection for the copper. A verdigris or greenish patina is a result of pollution in your area affecting the copper's aging process (think Statue of Liberty).
Primo recommends oiling your hinges and latch on a monthly basis. Use an approved lubricant, and try not to overspray and get lubricant on the copper finish.
Turn off your gas or electric lantern and let it cool for 15 minutes. Do not spray cleaner directly on the glass, as the overspray will affect the copper finish — instead, spray directly into a rag and wipe the glass thoroughly, allowing it to dry before relighting. The glass can also be removed for cleaning: it is held by bendable copper tabs, so gently remove the glass to clean it, and once dry, reinstall it, making sure the tabs hold the glass snug against the frame of the lantern.
